Preteen Love

“Tobi,” a fine young Hausa girl that sits behind me in class holla’d as she extended a folded paper to me. “Take. Bukky said to give this to you.” Bukky used to be one of my seatmates with two other girls but she stopped coming to school. I unfolded the paper, read through and it turned out to be a love letter. She was telling me how much she missed me and all those pre-teenage love talks. But what I did next still surprises me till date.

I got so angry after reading it that the other girls beside me were calming me down. They took the letter that was supposed to be personal and read too.

But really, who gets angry from reading an innocent love letter from a primary five class girl? I don’t think my anger was warranted at all. So, why did I react that way? It was a long time ago and I’m not sure why I did what I did but I’m sure about one thing: I liked Bukky too.

What a stupid way to show that you like somebody back.
